Fat Transplantation

Fat transplantation or fat rebalancing is a procedure used to augment both facial and body tissue by injecting a patient’s own fat into areas of lipoatrophy.

Fat can be injected into the face, breasts, buttocks, cheeks, calves and other areas of the body needing augmentation.

For facial enhancement, fat is injected into the gaunt areas to replicate a youthful appearance. In a young face, fat is evenly and smoothly distributed over the bone structure. During the aging process, fat redistributes over the face, leaving areas, typically around the jowls and the eyes, with a gaunt appearance. Fat is harvested from the buttocks or stomach and re-injected into both the folds of the face, as well as the deep tissue to plump up the skin. The fat grafts are anchored by the existing fat and the results are considered to be permanent, subject to the aging process of the entire face.

Sometimes additional treatments are needed over a year to achieve maximum results. As time passes, the patient may want to have “touch-up” treatments. Fat transplantation is often used in conjunction with laser resurfacing and/or Botox® to further enhance the texture and appearance of the skin.

"I wanted the effect of natural babyfat in my cheeks for a more youthful look. Dr. Wirtzer suggested transplanting fat from my own body into my cheeks The results were very smooth and without lumps. Dr. Wirtzer is a true artist."
—Brianna S., patient
