Psoriasis- New Effective Treatments

Psoriasis can be a serious, systemic, inflammatory disease that, to some degree, affects 2% of the U.S. population. That equates to more than 6 million people! Between 150,000 and 260,000 people contract psoriasis each year. Fortunately, the last several years have provided us with a much greater understanding of the causes of psoriasis, and research has yielded a new and improved treatment option. We understand that psoriasis is an inherited disease that affects one's immune system. So, what exactly is psoriasis?

This condition manifests as a scaling, thickened dry skin and white or silver plaques. They vary in location and the extent to which the body surface area is affected. Many people find that the common areas for their skin outbreaks are the scalp, elbows, knees and nails. Even though we can treat psoriasis, we also know that these skin manifestations can have a profound effect on peoples’ sense of self-worth. Some people experience selfconsciousness about their appearance; others feel embarrassed and some even become depressed. These feelings, which are perfectly natural and understandable, can have a profound impact on someone’s life – affecting their socializing, career (and thus their finances), relationships and even physical intimacy.

For many years, hundreds of thousands of people suffered with this condition. They were offered largely ineffective treatments such as topical medications, light therapy and some oral medications. Still, far too many people did not see the results they had hoped for and found they could not get their psoriasis under control. Many stopped their treatments out of frustration.

A new era in treating psoriasis has arrived! New medications called biologics are more effective as they target the immune system and block the inflammations associated with the condition. Some of the drugs such as Enbrel, Humira and Raptiva are injected in order to provide long-term remissions from psoriasis.

Mid-Valley Dermatology is pleased to announce the XTRAC Excimer Laser, which has proven to be an effective and painless treatment for psoriasis. We have found it to be particularly beneficial for those areas of the skin that have responded poorly to other treatments. If you have psoriasis, or know someone who does, please feel free to come in and discuss your concerns with us. We’re available for consultants regarding all the new treatment options available, and which one would be best for you. Please call us for an appointment at your convenience.

Don’t wait any longer! Schedule your consultation and be on your way to a new you!
