What You Never Knew About Botox -
Much More Than Reducing Wrinkles
Almost everyone has heard the word Botox (the trademark name for the
purified protein that is botulinum toxin). When you hear the word, you probably
think about reducing wrinkles; after all, that's one of the most popular
procedures available! But did you know that Botox and its related chemicals can
do much more than just reduce wrinkles?
Here’s a little bit about what Botox does. It works by interfering with the
transmission of a signal from the nerve end to organ that nerve controls. It could
be muscle or sweat gland or even other tissues. But, the interference lasts for a
limited time and then the signal between the nerve and tissue returns to normal.
Even though Botox is hugely popular for wrinkle reduction, it’s also being
investigated for its potential benefit in the treatment of a number of medication
conditions. This is what we’ve learned so far:
PAIN TREATMENT: One of the amazing abilities of Botox is to block the
transmission of pain signals. Current studies are investigating Botox in the
possible treatment of Migraines and the pain associated with Shingles. Even low
back pain and the pain of osteoarthritis have been shown to improve with Botox!
Botox is also being used in studies for the treatment of: prostate
enlargement, overactive bladder, anal fissures, TMJ (Temporo Mandibular Joint
Syndrome – which is the result of clenching the jaw and grinding our teeth) and
gastroparesis (a condition that often affects people with Diabetes and interferes
with the process of emptying the stomach).
As you can see, Botox is not just an ordinary chemical that helps to
reduce wrinkles. It has many other useful medicinal applications, and more will
likely be discovered in the coming years. Of course, at Mid Valley Dermatology
the most common usage of Botox is to relieve wrinkles and creases from
overactive muscles on the forehead and around the eyes. This is one of the most
patient-pleasing procedures we perform. If you’d like your questions about Botox
